Are Modern Black Kitchen Cabinets A Fad?

BLACK CABINET REFACING | CA

For numerous decades, white has been the go-to color for kitchens around the world. While the mid- 20th century brought in some bold color changes for a little while, savvy homeowners who were concerned about longevity and about resale value as well eventually returned to white.

Even though white kitchens scream clean and simple, there’s a new color in town that boasts chicness and elegance. That color is black.

Black kitchen cabinets have become amazingly trendy in the last five years or so. You’ll now find these modern kitchen cabinets and all the elements that go with them in kitchens of all sizes and in a variety of locales, from small urban spaces to large suburban homes.

But are modern black kitchen cabinets a fad that’s soon to fade away? Or is there a reason for black to stay on the kitchen design scene?

Versatility

When you ponder the use of black in the kitchen, you come to realize that it isn’t all that different from a white kitchen. Black kitchen cabinets offer the same blank slate; you can pair them with about anything to get the look you’re hoping to achieve.

If you want your kitchen to look industrial, you can pair matte black kitchen cabinets with a concrete countertop, nickel or brass pendant lights, industrial-style sinks and faucets, and other touches that provide that old warehouse or factory look.

If it’s ultra-modern you seek, you can go ALL black. That’s trendy these days and doesn’t really close in the kitchen like you think it might, especially if you have ample natural light. Some homeowners pair their dark modern kitchen cabinets with black countertops, black appliances, black walls, and even a black floor. They use other elements to break up the monochromatic palette, like countertop appliances in a vibrant color or a kitchen table in gray or other neutral color.

Those who want a luxury look often to opt for high-gloss black kitchen cabinets rather than the matte variety. These modern kitchen cabinets look chic and can be paired with gold for a very sophisticated appearance that screams high end. Look for black quartz countertops with flecks of gold, gold-toned lighting, gold sink fixtures/faucets, and a black tiled backsplash with the occasional gold tile thrown in the mix.

If you own a home in a very urban setting, like a NYC or LA apartment, black works perfectly. Black kitchen cabinets are an ideal complement for exposed brick walls or exposed pipes or beams. Add some hardwood floors and a small distressed wooden table with some funky chairs, and you’ll no doubt love that you’ve chosen black as the primary color in your small kitchen.

Bold not bland

When we think of bold colors in the kitchen, we think of reds, oranges, yellows, or other such shades. But kitchen design experts tell us that black is the new bold. It’s not the boring color that we once believed it to be. Furthermore, there are so many shades of black that it’s easy to mix and match a bunch of black hues to keep the palette interesting.

Incidentally, Americans are amongst the last to jump on the black kitchen cabinet bandwagon. While we’ve been using modern white (and other color) kitchen cabinets for a few decades, we’ve only caught on to this trend in the last few years. In fact, IKEA’s sales of black kitchen cabinets in Scandinavia and mainland Europe have been robust for the last 15-20 years, long before American homeowners started considering the color for their kitchens. That’s a good indication that it’s here to stay.
